The problem is that if the address you are sending from does not match,
excactly, the address you subscribed with the message will be flagged as
requiring modertation because we do not allow non-subscribers to post to the
list (too much spam).  I believe the list is operating fine it is probably just
that you sent from a different address than you usually use for posting.

Maybe reply worked because you have some sort of smart "from address" picker
that uses a specific address to reply to messages in the clug folder / mailing
list / etc?  I'm not sure what MUA you are using but I know I have behaviour
like this in Mutt.

Yes.  Although one needs try and post in ways that the majority of the users
will be able to read the message.  This is why we frown upon HTML mail and
such.  To keep the majority of MUAs happy and displaying things properly reply
to messages when you continue a thread.  If you want to start a new thread one
should just form a new message.
