I think all of these responses show that linux is more than a hobby system. But perception among the general public is another thing. Linux, because it has a (relatively) small user base, is considered a hobby system compared to Windows. Many people do not adapt it because it is seen as a hobby system. I don't think Linux will thrive in the desktop market until this perception can be corrected. A lot of people chalk the lack of conversions up to non-user-friendlieness. This is part of the problem, but the myths surrounding linux (mostly propagated by M$) are the bigger problem IMO.

On a side note, I wonder why Apple never attacks Linux. One would think they have more to lose by people finding a free, easy-to-use UNIX variant...

NO. I write commercial java and .net applications and components etc for a large systems integration company. I do all my java, and c++ development on linux where I have J2EE servers from IBM, Weblogic, Macromedia and others for testing and performance comparisons. I do my .Net development on a windows system running in a virtual machine under linux.
It's a little more work to configure most things but that pays off in that things are a LOT more configurable. I never follow a problem to a proprietary piece of code and then have to sit on my hands while someone's help desk wastes my time.
Clearly I don't think its a hobby system, its just a good system that you can use for a hobby if you like ... cause its free!

ProFTPD should compile no problem. It's also the one FTP daemon I

What would you use as an alternative? I know about SFTP, and, I must admit, this would be my utility of choice, because (to my knowledge) it only requires the SSH daemon.

I agree SFTP is the way to go, however for a ftp standard on Mandrake I would recommend wu-ftpd. It is well documented and one can "tweak" it quite nicely.
