One real-life experience I had with Sony is that replacement parts are at best hard to get, especially after 3-4 years. If you _really_ want a Sony Viao laptop, make sure to ask the following questions:

1) how long will Sony guarantee to have parts available such as the video converter board that drives the lcd screen for that model;
2) what is Sony ready and willing to do once their parts supplies dry up while the federally regulated mandates parts to be available for 7 years from the start of a model;
3) be sure to get at least a 3-year warranty with Sony laptops, 5-year warranty if you want to keep it longer.

I've been burnt by Sony who portray themselves as model electronic supplier, but are less than reliable (honest?) in their parts supply.

Consider http://www.eurocom.com/ of Ottawa. They'll ship laptops with Linux installed (at least, used to).

I've heard through through the grape-vine that Sonys are fairly well
supported. KDE or SuSE (can't remember which) even have widgets for
configuring some of the special keys and buttons on them. I don't know
much else about them.
