Tips and tricks, you say? Hmm... my number one piece of advice is to write down your partitions, and *make sure you mount them correctly*! I have been forced to redo a stage 1 at least twice because of partition mounting mistakes.

Other than it being even slower, I don't think there are any issues with installing Gentoo in a VM.
