They exist for applications where there are no other options.  That will be 
because either the software won't run on that platform, or because there is 
an expensive license involved in purchasing the full version of the software.  
Neither of these are legitimate issues with Open Office.

As already covered, both PDF and HTML offer options that are easily handled by 
any device these days.  Open Office supports both.
