Sorry Neil, this was more or less what you were suggesting.

SVG is supposed to be the up-and-coming standard. Again, the various 
implementations of it make it a little dicey to work with yet, the same as 
EPS.

I'm wondering if the fact that these files are coming from a Mac means that 
the extensions (or lack of them) may be causing the problem. Do the files 
have an extension? Perhaps copying one or two off the disc on the 'PC', 
renaming it with .eps and trying to open it with the appropriate software may 
work.

You can also open the file in a text editor and read the first couple lines to 
get a clue as to what the file should be. EPS are ASCII I believe and if you 
knew how to read the file, you could edit it manually.

Just a couple other tidbits I've picked up in my dealings with vector images.
