I have all the files on my computer single and archived. I thought, that 
mput a tar file will unpack it on the server. I tried uploading 
individual files too, see message above.

yes, but if I am in ftp, I can't run tar xf...

yes.

I printed out all the ftp man pages, but obviously, I am missing something.
