Our children were 16, 15 and 7 when my husband was diagnosed 2 years ago. We were unable to wait, as the older ones were aware of unusual appointments, etc. We told them honestly what we knew at the time. Gleevec was newer, so you will have more postive information to share. We were able to keep a normal schedule with their activities, and tried to fall apart in private.
Now, almost 2 years later, I think they sometimes forget. We are in the middle of assembling our 2nd Light the Night team, involving my son's football team. They are doing as well as my husband!
