Welcome Alexis,
What dose of Gleevec was he on?  It could be he just needed a higher 
dose.  Had you reached any level of remission?  There are Gleevec 
treatments where they are combining with other meds now.  There's 
also various trials going on for new treatments.  What did your onc 
say about the situation?  Englarged spleen could be causing your dad 
pain, this is typical in leukemia.  Side effects vary from each 
person, the most common are: joint & muscle pain/cramps, diarrhia, 
Edema around the eyes, nausea & headaches.  This is a great sight to 
get information.  I hope your dad improves soon.  Take care.
