See recent posts this week about BM biopsy. The recommendation is a marrow at diagnosis, 6 months and 12 months after starting Gleevec. Perhaps another one at 18 months depending on how the person is responding. Might skip this one if a Complete Cytogenetic response (0/20 metaphases Ph+) was previously reached. The recommendation thereafter is a marrow on a yearly basis. These recommendations might change in the future.
Ideally your husband should have a marrow test at 12 months from the time he began Gleevec. If that cannot be done, then it seems to me a good idea to at least have a FISH and PCR test done on the blood. The recommendation is for a quantitative PCR test for BCR-ABL every 3 months (regardless of response to Gleevec).
