I was out in Colorado for a family wedding in September and spent some time
visiting my younger brother, who lives in Silverthorne near Lake Dillon. I was
surprised by the number of larger boats there, including several full-keel,
first-generation Bristols.

I think I would own a J-24 or something like it there. Yeah, they have gusts,
but also tiny waves. Going fast is the only issue on a small lake like that.

My brother built a beautiful wooden kayak that he upgraded with a sailing rig,
and he has lots of fun sailing/paddling around the lake. He wouldn’t do well
with that rig in the Atlantic.

I sailed on a J-24 in Lake Dillon back in 1990. She was the largest yacht in
the fleet, but I was completely surprised by the number of small boats that
sail in the lake during the 2 to 3 months that it is not frozen. Neat little YC
as well. This month's Soundings has a small article (restoring a Star boat)
that includes Lake Dillon

I was driving across Lake Dillon Dam (Colorado) this morning looking at
the completely frozen lake. In front of the dam was a line of orange drums to
keep stray boaters away from the hydroelectric plant topworks. Near the end of
the drums was a point with a buoy sitting on top fully 15 feet above the water
(ice) level. The lake is currently down 20-25 feet.

I've heard interesting tales about sailing and racing on Lake Dillon and
other mountain lakes. Strong gusts coming out of valleys and dead spots behind
points, etc. Gotta be on your toes if you're drifting along with a chute and
sail into one of those gusts. :o Whole different kind of sailing than what
I'm used to.

Lake Dillon is home to the Dillon Yacht Club, the nation's highest at
9017 feet (http://www.dillonyachtclub.com/). Club has never been open when I'm
here during the winter. All the boats are, of course, hauled out for the
winter.
