A side note on sextants, etc.  I heard this story after last year's Gulfport >
Pensacola Race (100 mile offshore race down the Gulf Coast).

Race conditions were very rough; low to mid 20's dead upwind, 6-8 foot seas.
In the wee hours of the morning, a crew member on one of the boats came up from
below to relieve himself at the shrouds and fell overboard.  He did not have
his PFD on.  Serious situation.

Fortunately for the MOB, one of the crew on watch was an experienced pilot and
the night was clear.  The pilot immediately scanned the stars, jumped on the
helm and guided the boat back towards the MOB using his knowledge of the stars.
The MOB had a small penlight that he managed to get out of his pocket and turn
on. They managed to find and recover the MOB.
