The US Customs and Border Patrol is trying to make border crossing a bit easier. It is introducing the Enhanced Driver's License (EDL) Which will allow you to cross between the uS and Canada without a passport. It's already enacted in NY, Michigan, Vermont and Washington. Other states (Ohio, Minn, ND, Idaho, NH, and Maine) are in the process of developing their own EDL programs. You will still be required to follow the standard procedure check in.
