Really, I don't think the problem of getting the next generation into sailing 
is one of cost...though it might be one of perceived cost. Someone with a 
pretty low budget can get a good boat like the 35 advertised and make it work 
for them for a long time with little investment. When I was young...er, I 
certainly didn't need the comfort I want now in order to enjoy cruising. 
Younger sailors can easily put up with a boat that many of us would walk away 
from; always going to be better than camping!
I think a decent introduction to the joys of cruising would go a long way to 
getting them in the sport. The one's who aren't addicted to video games, 
anyway. And don't forget, sailing is not for everyone. You must be able to deal 
with a bit of discomfort and delayed gratification; you must be able to handle 
participating in an activity where you will never feel like an expert and, I 
think, you must have a love of learning, because that never stops when you're 
sailing. And not to sound snobbish, but sailing is an elite pastime; you don't 
find a lot of dummies engaged in it.
