My best tool for night is good 7X50 binoculars. It is amazing how much you can see at night with good ones.

We get plenty of fog and rain here and a flashlight is usually the last tool I look for. I find that being night-blind is worse than straining to see through the dark. On overnights, I generally turn off all the instrument lights except the compass and have an occasional peek below to see precisely where I am. It's surprising how well one can see after the eyes adjust to the darkness. I install a lot of equipment and have never understood the notion of putting everything behind the wheel and spending helm time totally occupied by the magic of electrons.
