FYI: One lead-acid cell is about 2 volts. They are rated in Amp-Hours. 100 AH is 1 amp for 100 hours or 100 amps for one hour*. When you buy batteries, you can get more than one cell per battery. While it is possible to get individual 2 volt cells, most people have seen batteries with 6 cells, i.e. 12 volts, and 3 cells, i.e. 6 volts. You can also find 4 and 8 volt (2 and 4 cell) batteries and many airplanes have 12 cell batteries for 24 volts.
So, if you don't want one giant battery no one can pick up, you can split them up two ways. One is to get 6 cells - 12 volts - per battery and add them together until you get the AH you want. Another way is to get less cells per battery and split them up that way. Three 220 AH cells weigh half as much as six, so you can get two 6 volt batteries and add them in series and thus have 6 cells for 12 volts. You still have 220 AH per cell, so you get 220 AH at 12 volts. Just imagine sawing a 12 volt battery in half to carry it and connecting it back together on the boat. http://www.trojanbattery.com/product/l16re-2v/ Here is a 2 volt battery rated around 1100 AH that weighs about 120 pounds. 6 of them will give you a huge bank that still could be moved without a forklift.
