David, About 4 years ago I designed and had custom machined aluminum stanchion bases that through bolt to the toerail. I designed the clamps for gate type loads (higher bending load as a person leverages themselves on board) as well as not having to slide the clamp into position from an opening in the toerail. They extend +- 4" either side of the stanchion, have 4 through bolts plus one through the stanchion itself.
IIRC with anodizing and machine shop costs (I had 4 assemblies machined) the cost each was around $200. All 4 have stood up well to the salt water exposure and have not shown any wear and tear from several race and cruise seasons.
