My arrangement is like Russ’s: ¾” through hull (no scoop strainer on the outside of the hull), ball valve, ¾” hose barb (I removed the 90 degree barb and replaced it with a straight one when I did the engine swap in 2011), ¾” hose to a Groco bronze strainer, then ¾” hose to the inlet on the raw water pump.
No restrictions since I did the repower, though I have cleaner the basket in the strainer once, I think. I used the Groco strainer because the mechanic who was helping with the engine ( who is also a friend) had a used Groco with a cracked glass that he sold me cheap. I thought the Groco would be a better choice because it was bigger and stronger than the plastic Forespar strainer I had purchased for the installation. Then I found out the price for the replacement glass and seal for the Groco. I still have the Forespar strainer out in the garage in a West Marine bag. It is a ¾” version that looks like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Forespar-906166-RAW-WATER-STRAINER-T-1-1-2IN-/361366339391?hash=item54231cbf3f <http://www.ebay.com/itm/Forespar-906166-RAW-WATER-STRAINER-T-1-1-2IN-/361366339391?hash=item54231cbf3f&vxp=mtr> &vxp=mtr . I’ve never gotten around to getting the one I have listed on EBay. If you are interested in using it for your boat, send $25 to Stu to support the Photo Album, and send me your address off list. I’ll mail the strainer to you. My system is not the best, a thru-hill, S/S ball valve and hose lead to an inlet elbow at the strainer near waterline elevation. The strainer outlet is a straight fitting.. go figure. It needs to be changed to a proper thru-hull (no choke point) with fair lead and straight fitting into the strainer. As a temporary measure I glued one of these, using 5200, onto the hull outside of the intake during the haul-out. http://www.go2marine.com/product/202961F/buck-algonquin-bronze-scoop-strainers.html That was 5 or 6 years ago :) It is not really glued to the hull, just stuck to the paint. So I expect it to fall off some day but like I said, it's temporary (until I do a real fix after it falls off :) Cheers, Russ Sweet 35 mk-1 At 01:57 PM 16/08/2015, you wrote: Hey All, Twice now I have developed clogs in the raw water intake. In both cases I was able to remove the water line and flush out whatever was in there. There is a 90 degree elbow threaded into the seacock and Im thinking thats where its clogging but I’m not sure. I am in the process of adding a raw water strainer (not sure why it didn’t have one) and was thinking that removing the elbow and adding a straight nipple would help prevent the clogs. While I’m at it, does anyone have any recommendation on what strainer to buy? I am looking at the Groco ones but they have several different ones that all fit 3/4†NPT.
