Bill: Fortunately, we don't have Zebra mussels on the Chesapeake Bay! On my water-cooled air conditioner, I put a chlorine tablet (its about 1-inch in diameter and about 3/4-inch thick from a pool supply house) in the strainer basket each week--this seems to keep things from growing in the cooling water system. Occasionally, the system sucks up a nettle (jellyfish) and I have to clean it out of the strainer.
