My friend who finished second overall and first in class at last year's Newport to Bermuda race sprayed his bottom (Cal 40). Used a number of thin coats of some expensive new paint. We have also sprayed Balto-plate. I think Vivid may work with a sprayer, as it is rather thin. Talk to the vendors.
In all cases, masking is critical and tenting everything is mandatory - on the Balto-plate, it was out in a field, and we built a shelter. The new stuff was applied in a tent. Not a good idea. Bottom paint should be thinned as little as possible and never by more than 10%. Too much thinner changes the structure of the paint when it dries and cures, which is critical to how it works. Not thinning it at all is optimum, but most thin it SLIGHTLY to make it easier to roll on. Has anyone done this? I'm looking to see some time and energy, but am concerned about wasting paint, accidentally painting the topsides, or painting someone else's boat or nearby car. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. It's 67 degrees in New York right now and I'm getting the itch. All the best, Edd Edd M.
