Hi Christian

Congratulations on the purchase of your new Boat!

We have done a lot of deck recoring on our previous two boats. These were a
Hinterhoeller built Niagara 26 which shares a lot of construction techniques
and parts with C&Cs due to George Hinterhoeller’s involvement in both
companies. The second was a J/27. These are balsa cored decks the same as
C&C’s. We chose to do the job from the top and to build our own deck skin.
Others will peel off the top layer of deck fiberglass and reuse it for
conformity while a third method is to tackle the job from below. All three
methods do a good job but the first is probably the simplest and the one least
likely to end up with voids. I have documented a deck recoring project from
the J27 at this link http://users.eastlink.ca/~mhoyt/Projects/recore/recore.htm

You should note that once you feel “soft spots” that the core is likely rotted.
A wet deck is actually quite strong right up until it begins to rot.

This list as a valuable resource for you and I am sure you will hear from
others on the list who will tell you that this is not a difficult job and not
beyond the capabilities of a capable DIY person.

Enjoy your 34!
