Hey guys,

You guys might need to dig a little deeper, try wiki/monel and look to the section "other" and the alloy Monel 400, which will be the common tank material.

BTW, it is also the best alloy for kitchen sinks... a much harsher application than a water tank that gets "shocked" once or twice a year.

It is THE preferred alloy for marine applications, far superior than stainless steels but a little more expensive so you won't see much on production yachts. Lastly, a little reminder about our salt water boats sitting in a solution of NaCl (sodium & chloride) and the shaft and thingies down there last for years and years because of an ultra low corrosion rate if Monel is used.

My spring tank routine is a bleach shock (about 1/2 cup for 15 gallons) to a 1/2 tank then fill to top. After a 1 beer soak, I pop the outlet hose and drain to bilge. A couple of good rinses follow and done for another year. During summer I might add a teaspoon of bleach during a fill if I remember. We use the tank for drinking and coffee water but put it through a Britta filter.
The above will freshen the bilge as a bonus.

Just did some Google-Fu and Monel might not be especially good with chlorine.

Ron,

This looks like a winner! The tanks are in my Hylas. The Office did not have Monel.

I've read that chlorine reacts with the metal so it should be avoided, but that info could be wrong.

Joel,

Here’s what I used for my ‘plastic’ tanks: <https://www.fisheriessupply.com/thetford-fresh-water-tank-sanitizer-36662>https://www.fisheriessupply.com/thetford-fresh-water-tank-sanitizer-36662. It is supposed to be non-corrosive.

I’m curious how you got Monel tanks. It is corrosion resistant but does corrode. I have a 3” ball from a sea valve that has ¼” deep pits on the surface where it was exposed to salt water.

Anything you can add to monel water tanks to keep them clean?
