Hi Alex Those are to make it easier to install in an existing structure - you can get the same thing for use in renovating a house. The metal piece on the back is intended to hold it into a hole. If you make a cutout the size of the box you can fit it in, the flanges on the front stop it from falling into the "wall" and the piece on the back is to tightened against the inside surface you've installed it in. A face plate will fit over the flanges no problem.
