Are you sure that the problem is the inner bore of the drum wallowing out? I would think the caged roller bearings between the drum and the central shaft of the winch would be a more likely item to wear… particularly if you have the generation of winch that had synthetic roller bearings instead of bronze, or if the PO did not service the winches properly and dirt got into the bearings.
