Keep in mind that most of our inboard engines are mounted at an angle. And also most come from a tractor industry, where they were designed to be used flat. This means that in many (most?) cases, the dipstick shows an incorrect level of oil (usually lower than it should be). You have to find out what is the right level on the dipstick in your particular engine. Sucking out or draining the oil is certainly one way of figuring this out.
