Our old 1970 Redwing 35 (C&C 35, Mark I) had the full vang set up with the roller reefing boom.  The vang used a canvas strap around the base of the mast and the collar on the boom with 4/1 wooden block and tackle.  The canvas strap finally tore and we fixed the roller boom when we added lazy jacks.  Never did add a vang back in but did use the collar a time or two as a preventer.

We did roll the main a couple of times to reef.  It left a few wrinkles in the main, but when the Redwing needed to reef, a few wrinkles were not an issue.  We usually reefed the main at about 14-15 kts (true).  The headsail was furled down from the 150 a little sooner.

Dennis nailed it.

Learn something new every day.  I googled "vang collar reefing boom” and came across the photo below of what is referred to as a reefing horseshoe or reefing claw for the boom vang

That's a vang collar.  Betting you have a round boom.  Also guessing it is
a roller boom.  Is there a place in the gooseneck assembly to insert a
crank and roll the boom?

The vang collar slides over the outboard end of the boom.  It is moved
towards the mast and a vang is attached to it.  If necessary, the mainsail
could be roller reefed a bit with the collar installed.  Not recommended.
