Fred,
I was with Glenn on our first race with the Raymarine Axiom 9. We were
fine until full darkness when the screen brightness overwhelmed Glenn to
the point that he became disoriented. We literally turned circles in
front of a freighter until we could get the brightness down and regained
our night vision. It seemed like we were doing fine until, suddenly, we
were unable to compensate for the brightness. We were used to my Garmin
276C (that we had used for the previous couple of years) that
automatically goes into night mode at sundown. The GPS knows when local
sundown is, it's not that difficult to program a night mode.

Glenn — you can turn down the brightness using the power button; this
works well for nighttime use. But yes, you’re correct, they don’t
have a specific night color scheme.
I don’t think the Lighthouse charts are going to be as good in
Canadian waters as the Navionics+ North America charts.

Fred,
Just wondered if I am correct that Raymarine Axiom 9, which I have
with Navionics+, still does not have a night mode similar to Garmin?
When I discovered that, I contacted their support guy (Charles,
Chuck) and he indicated they did not have a night mode. He started a
ticket on that request to determine if one could be added. What in
the world were they thinking.
Secondly, I could swap out Navionics+ for the Raymarine charts, but
wonder what you think of both? I will be traveling up into Canadian
waters (Lake Huron, Georgian Bay) this summer and wonder if there is
a difference in what one sees on the charts?
