Yes Garmin GPSMAP 740 does the same.  It often does this just as we are 
navigating tricky areas and suddenly the dimness makes it very difficult to 
read.  Switching the light blue to dark blue also causes difficulty.  I am one 
person who does not like the automatic switching and would rather have a manual 
switch for this purpose.

My Garmin plotters have two different colour schemes AND two different display 
brightness settings, one colour and brightness for day, and the other for 
night. It switches automatically between these settings at sun set / sunrise.
