For what it's worth, I only have two reef lines in my boom, too. When I sail
offshore I rig them to the second and third reefs. I figure that if it's
blowing hard enough that I want one reef, I may as well put two in and stand up
that much straighter. Close reaching into the BVI last month was a classic
example; the wind had eased to 16-19 at about 75 apparent, we had two reefs,
staysail, 65% of the #3 unrolled, and we were loving sailing at 7.5 knots,
standing up instead of over on our ear. We could have shaken the reefs and
unrolled all the jib quite safely, but we would have been heeled way over and
only gained a knot or so while greatly decreasing our comfort level. I might
have done it anyway, just for fun, but we would have arrived in the dark.
Racing, of course is a different matter!
