If this is the Autohelm wheel autopilot with the black ring around the wheel, 
then in both cases it seems like adjusting the cam should help.  It is popping 
loose because there is too much tension, and the belt is slipping because there 
is too little.  The grey wheel assembly is the newer version but not that much 
changed.  The plug is removable using a small pick to pull out at one edge.  
It's pretty hard to do real damage to it.  You should be able to download the 
old manual to get a good feel for how it works.
