Tom, The threaded connection will probably need a bench vice and a pry bar/crow bar to assemble and align. As for the goop, the threaded part should never be hot to touch so any typical sealant will be fine.
Also consider that pipe dope or teflon tape doesn't actually create a seal. A NPT fitting has threads that are not parallel. As such the metal to metal interface gets tighter and seals better the more you turn it. Teflon tape and pipe dope are really just lubricants which reduce the friction and allow an even tighter connection. I work in an industrial plant that has thousands of pipe caps and NPT fittings. If one leaks we just tighten it until it stops...usually without any sealant. I did the same thing for the exhaust riser on my 3HM35F except that I had some cutting oil sitting around and applied that first. My threaded coupling was bronze. If for some reason yours is stainless then it will be imperative that you lube the threads in order to prevent galling.
