Vacuum gauges are useful, but they only tell half the story. No vacuum can indicate all is well or it can indicate the fuel pump failed. The engine - gas or diesel - could not care less about vacuum, it wants fuel.

You will see your fuel pressure and the gauge lights up red if it goes below 3 PSI. They are available in various ranges, I use a 5 PSI version for my A4 that lights up at 1 PSI. The electric sender avoids running pressurized fuel around the boat, which is good in general and really good for gasoline.
