A dedicated discharge would be best but not necessary.  Joining the two
pump discharges would be okay.

However, if your existing pump is a centrifugal (non-positive displacement
like an impeller or diaphragm) pump, you'll need a check valve to prevent
the water from flowing through the old pump.  I recommend a Bosworth
flapper style check valve.
