Thanks for all the suggestions.  In the end I snagged a simple 12 VDC power
supply off eBay for under $10 and a cheap extension cord from Walmart.  So
for less than $20 I cobbled up this:

Works great.  Puts out 12 volts DC.  Used it to power up a spare GPS here
at the house to pre-load waypoints and routes prior to installing on the
boat.
