On the Pawnee Grasslands, it was a beautiful, mostly overcast, green day for the start of the summer quarter.
Crow Valley Highlights: Swainson's Thrush (10+) Red-breasted Nuthatch (1) American Robin babies fledged normal breeding species (except I did not see the Eastern Screech-Owl) no migrating warblers or vireos that I could find Total of 28 species. GR96: McCown's Longspur (several) did not hunt for Chestnut-collared Longspur but didn't hear any while out of the car for 2 hours other normal birds Western Hognose Snake (14" long, in the road) very cool snake Just west of Norma's Grove (i.e., right at the intersection of Weld CR100/57): Red-headed Woodpecker (1 adult) working the fenceline (for grasshoppers, I think) and then going to wooden poles (to cache, I think) Loggerhead Shrike (pair building a nest in the white poplars just w of 57 on the south side of 100). Of the five insects found impaled in the vacinity (four on barbed wire, one on a locust thorn), all were Red-shanked Grasshoppers (Xanthippus corallipes). When I visited on 26May there was also an impaled Speckle-winged Rangeland Grasshopper (Arpha conspersa). Mountain Bluebird (1 female without a tail) very late to be on the Pawnee, along CR49 s of CR120 Brewer's Sparrow (heard and seen just about anywhere with saltbush Cassin's Sparrow (heard at just a couple spots (south of 100 just west of 57 and along 37 north of 106) - my impression is that they are not as common on PNG as last summer) Grasshopper Sparrow (heard) along CR100 about 1m e of CR33 Lark Sparrow (nest with 3 eggs) along CR100 about 1m e of CR33 Swift Fox family of four babies and the female at the den mouth along the east side of CR37 north of CR106 If you ever want to see Evening Primrose in profusion, now is the time to visit the Pawnee Grasslands. It looks like patches of snow off in the distance in local areas.
