Greetings everyone,
I spent the day checking up on many of the reported rarities in the region with
varying success. In the morning I was joined by my friend, Jules Hicks, while
we searched for raptors and loons near Hygiene. At Lagerman Reservoir we found
the two immature COMMON LOONS and an assortment of waterfowl. The adult
light-morph HARLAN'S HAWK (with anomalous red tail feathers) has returned to
the corner of St. Vrain Rd and N 75th St south of Hygiene. We had many raptors
along N 75th including 6 Western RED-TAILED HAWKS, 1 female AMERICAN KESTREL, 1
adult BALD EAGLE and 1 adult female NORTHERN HARRIER.
Over at Baseline Reservoir I caught up with the three SURF SCOTERS. The two
females have been joined by an immature male as others have reported. At least
one of the females revealed a pale belly the other day, so one is an immature
(probably both).
While driving south on Hwy 93 south of Boulder I spotted a low-flying flock of
55 SANDHILL CRANES. I got ahead of them and sat in ambush at the Flatirons
Vista Trailhead and they soon flew right overhead. I'm tempted to consider them
to be Lesser Sandhills by what I can make out of the wing-pattern, and the late
date. These could have come from as far away as Siberia.
I struck out on the Parasitic Jaeger at Chatfield Reservoir. I did see 6 COMMON
LOONS.
I could only drum up 5 COMMON LOONS at Standley Reservoir, a bit down from the
8 I saw there yesterday.
Photos of the cranes, scoters and Red-taileds can be seen here:
