This is the Colorado Rare Bird Alert for Friday, January 8, 2010 at 5 am
sponsored by Denver Field Ornithologists and the Rocky Mountain Bird 
Observatory.

Adams County:
--A Winter Wren was reported by Slingsby on the Barr Lake CBC on January 3.  It 
was found below (NE of) the dam.  There is a ditch that runs parallel and below 
the dam.  The Winter Wren was seen at the very east end of the ditch.  The 
ditch bottom has running water, no ice and some nice mud.  This area is easily 
access from the RMBO Old Stone House.  The road is plowed by the park or the 
water company and is not muddy.
--A Long-tailed Duck was reported by Roller on a reservoir south of 88th and 
east of the Platte and bounded on the east by Dahlia on January 4.  Breitsch 
reported 3 Long-tailed Ducks (1f, 2 juv) on West Gravel Lake on January 4.

Boulder County: 
--An imm GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL and Thayer's Gulls were reported by Nuissl at 
Erie Reservoir on January 3.
--A probable adult Gaucous Gull was reported by Cobb at Erie Reservoir on 
January 5.
 
Broomfield County:
--An imm GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was reported by Kibbe on a pond on the east 
side of Lowell south of CO 7 directly across from the intersection of Anthem 
Ranch Road and Lowell Blvd on December 30.  On January 2, Plage refound the imm 
GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL with a couple of Thayer's Gulls at the Anthem pond.
 
Delta County:
--Robinsong reported that Goldeneyes - both Common and Barrow's were raining 
onto the Gunnison River around Delta on January 6.
 
Delta/Mesa Counties
--On the Grand Mesa CBC on January 1, Didier reported 1 Barrow's Goldeneye, 30 
Gray-crowned Rosy-Finches, and 80 Black Rosy-Finches.
 
Denver County: 
--A pair of Barrow’s Goldeneye was reported by Henwood along the S.   
Platte River just north of the bridge on W. Evans Ave on December 14.
On January 6, Brower the male Barrrow's Goldeneye north of the Florida Bridge.
 
El Paso County:
--3 ad Lesser Black-backed Gulls were reported by Peterson at Big Johnson on 
January 6.
  
Jefferson County:
--A juv GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW was reported by Brown behind the Trading Post at 
Red Rocks on December 19 and was seen by several birders.  The sparrow was seen 
on January 5 by Henwood.   Chavez and Kibbe suggest bringing some bird seed and 
scattering it to attrack the birds.
  
Larimer County:
--A pair of White-winged Crossbills was reported by Leatherman in Grandview 
Cemetery in Fort Collins on November 22.  The pair was seen on January 5 by  
Leatherman in the west end of section 7.
--A f Long-tailed Duck was reported by Kaempfer on the Loveland CBC at Dry 
Creek Reservoir on January 1.  Dry Creek Reservoir is west of Berthoud and SE 
of Carter Lake.  DeFonso refound the Long-tailed Duck on January 4.
--Rusty Blackbirds were reported by Hundertmark on the Loveland CBC on January 
1 and again on January 2 at Simpson Ponds SWA.    Two blackbirds were seen 
reported by Andrews on January 5.
 
Logan/Sedgwick Counties:
--On the Crook CBC on January 2, Larson reported 1 White-throated Sparrow and 
11 Harris's Sparrows.
 
Montrose County:
--On the Montrose CBC, Sinton reported 1 Mute Swan and 1 Fox Sparrow.

Pueblo County:
--A Harris's Sparrow was reported by Kaempfer on the Pueblo CBC on Januray 4.  
It was seen at the end of 38 Lane off of CO 50 east of Pueblo.
--On the Pueblo CBC on January 4, Percival reported MEW GULL and Thayer's Gull.
 
San Juan County:
--All 3 species of Rosy-finches were reported by Morris visiting feeders on 
Empire Street in Silverton on January 2.
  
Summit County:
--About 85 Barrow's Goldeneyes were reported by Nims at the Blue River 
(Silverthorne) Water Treatment Plant on December 28.  On January 2, Nims 
reported 38 Barrow's Goldeneyes at the treatment plant. 
--120 Gray-crowned Rosy-Finches with 4 Hepburns were reported by Nims on Blue 
Ridge Road north of Silverthorne on January 2.  Directions:  Take CO 9 from 
Silverthorne.  FR 1400 or Blue Ridge Road is north of Boulder Creek or
FR 1375 on the west side of CO 9.
 
Weld County:
--A Harris's Sparrow was reported by Kaempfer on the Barr Lake CBC on January 3 
at the intersection of WCR 38 and Apaloosa.
--A probable imm RED SHOULDERED HAWK was reported by DeFonso at the Kodak SWA 
near Windsor on January 6.  It was discovered earlier by Elens.  The hawk was 
seen on January 7 by Komar and DeFonso.
       
The DFO Field Trip for Saturday, January 9 will be to South Platte Park and 
Carson Nature Center led by Ed Holub (303-979-2194).  Meet at 0800 at Nature 
Center parking lot (north of Mineral Ave, 1 block west of Santa Fe Dr, behind 
Aspen Grove shopping center).
 
The BBC/DFO Field Trip for Saturday, January 9 will be to the  Valmont Complex 
at
Xcel Power Plant hosted by Ted Floyd and Dave Madonna, plant engineer.  The 
triip
begins a noon at Xcel.  Please carpool since parking will be limited.  Leaders 
will
be Ted Floyd, Chip Clouse, Kill Kaempfer, Bill Schmoker, Walter Szeliga.  Will 
split
into 5 routes with one sutiable for persons with limited mobility.
 
The DFO Field Trip for Sunday, January 10 will be to the Wheatridge Greenbelt 
led by Kathanne Lynch (303-526-0670).  Meet at 10:30 at Prospect Lake north 
parking lot.  Bring lunch if you like.  Go south off 44th Ave between Quail and 
Robb St.
