Seems to have been a nice influx of gulls to northern Colorado. I heard from
others that good numbers of loafing/staging gulls were at Horseshoe and
Loveland Lakes in Loveland this afternoon, and that they flew off towards the
southwest at the end of the day. I joined Cole Wild at dusk to check out the
gull roost at Carter Lake, southwest of Loveland. Ring-billed Gull numbers were
low (less than 100), but larger gulls were well represented. The gulls were
distant and light was fading, but I believe the following were present:
Glaucous Gull – 4 (3 immatures, 1 adult)
Thayer’s Gull – 1+ first-cycle immatures
GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL – 1 first cycle (uniform brown from head to wingtip, large
droopy bill, duck-like shape, as large as the GLGUs present)
Lesser Black-backed Gull – 1 or 2
Herring Gull – several dozens

If anyone finds the Glaucous-winged Gull, and manages to get photos, please
share.
