Good Morning,
Michael Kiessig and I did a little birding this morning in Red Rocks
and Bear Creek Lake Park (BCLP).
After about 30 minutes the Golden-crowned Sparrow (FOS to my
knowledge) put in an appearance on and below the platform feeders at
the Red Rocks Trading Post (about 8:30 a.m.) The nonbreeding adult
showed the dull lemon yellow forecrown. The bird didn't stay long, but
did land on the platform briefly as well as feed underneath the
platform feeder before disappearing back into the dense shrubbery.
Makes one wonder if the bird blew in with the winds from the
northwest. Probably should take seed if you go - I will be gone for
the next week.
Other birds at the Red Rocks feeders and surrounding area included:
one Rock Dove with white splotches on the back of its crown - same
bird we saw on Monday.
Good numbers of Western Scrub-Jays
heard one Blue Jay - uncommon at Red Rocks
several Black-billed magpies
both Black-capped and Mountain Chickadee
White-breasted Nuthatch
American Robin
Townsend's Solitaire - heard
4 Spotted Towhees
2 Song Sparrows
2 adult White-crowned Sparrows plus two first year birds.
Dark-eyed Juncos in good numbers including Gray-headed, Pink-sided,
Oregon, Slate-colored, and Cassiar. Everything but White-winged.
25+ House Finches
At BCLP (Pelican Point area) we had a small mixed flock of birds
including several Myrtle Warblers, a first year Slate-colored Junco, a
first year American Tree Sparrow, and a mountain White-breasted
Nuthatch. There was one American White Pelican on the lake as well as
5-10 Western Grebes scattered around and an assortment of ducks
(nothing uncommon).
