This past Sunday was, as they say, a good day for ducks. I had repaired
the tripod, and wanted to test it out looking at distant things, so we went
to Chatfield, hoping for gulls. Except-- they were ice fishing on
Chatfield, and it was birdless. Just across C470, however, South Platte
Res was completely devoid of ice. Most of its surrounding ponds were
thawed out, too.

In this area, of note was a pair of Greater Scaup, along with one female
Lesser Scaup.

Also Green-winged Teal, Pintail, Bufflehead, Ruddy Ducks, many displaying
Goldeneye (there are tons of Goldeneye around town right now), Hooded
Mergansers, PB Grebes, many Shovelers, and of course, Mallards and Canada
Geese. 1 Great Blue Heron as well.

Marston Lake had a good number of Redheads and Hoodies, along with
Goldeneye and Ring-billed Gulls. No Gull, unfortunately, failed to be
Ring-billed.

Back in Lakewood, East Reservoir was very entertaining for the aggressive
courtship competition of male Hoodies. Also Ring-necked Ducks, Wigeon,
many Red-wing Blackbirds, and a couple of Common Mergansers.
