The retained option for windows in IB applies to the window's back buffer settings. Retained means it only buffers sections offscreen and onscreen drawing is done directly instead of to a back buffer first. Not related to the window's retain count.

I've tried to use the Retained option, thinking that this way I shouldn't use the retain message, but with Retained the windows appears but doesn't accept any interaction.
