This is all a bit excessive. The NSGraphicsContext class methods for saving/restoring state *do* save and restore the graphics context too. Just wrap the whole thing in [NSGraphicsContext saveGraphicsState] and [NSGraphicsContext restoreGraphicsState] and off you go.
