The simplest way I've accomplished this is:

[[NSString alloc] initWithCString:(const char *)nullTerminatedCString encoding:(NSStringEncoding)encoding];

Where encoding is :NSUTF8StringEncoding

You will then have to replace the "unknown" char with a "." with the NSString method:

stringByReplacingOccurrencesOfString:withString:
