Where is that documented? I've been doing this without consideration and nothing's blown up yet.
How is a method to know if an object it's been passed is in a collection? Equally how are you to know if a method is going to mutate an object's properties?
You simply can't determine either situation conclusively. If this is so fundamental, why haven't I been tripped up by it?
