It is a real example, but it is from the section that is teaching straight ObjC. Cocoa doesn't really get introduced into that book until chapter 14 "Introduction to the Foundation Framework".

On page 313 he says "In all the programs up to this point, you used the root object Object. The Foundation framework uses a different root object called NSObject." You'll get there soon.

So original poster, probably the Obj-C mailing list might be a better place to ask about Kochan examples until you get to chapter 14.
