Sticking with NSEvent is better not because GetCurrentKeyModifiers() is Carbon, but because of the nature of GetCurrentKeyModifiers(). Please read the excellent comments in the header that I mentioned. The OP was vague on his goals/needs, so GetCurrentKeyModifiers() maybe appropriate.
