At least until Xcode gets gcc 4.3, where -Wconversion has been renamed -Wtraditional-conversion, and -Wconversion gives useful warnings about variables that might have their value changed during the conversion.

This page http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Conceptual/64bitPorting/building/building.html does seem to suggest that -Wconversion has its place but istm that you will have a lot of difficulty isolating the real problems from all of the error chaff.
