Is it possible that the views contained in the split view perhaps not being wholly nested or having some overlap issue can cause this problem?

I don't want to take it apart and reassemble unless there is some possibility of success.

On occasion I've seen a things like this happen if a data source method has raised an exception. It's generally not safe to throw an exception through AppKit code; its internal state can become inconsistent.
