The only thing I can think of is that the text system is deciding that Osaka doesn’t have glyphs for the Roman alphabet, and substituting a font that does instead (which will happen at rendering time anyway, if the glyphs are missing.) That said, I don’t know for sure whether Osaka has Roman glyphs in it or not. The sample in Font book includes a Roman alphabet, but it looks like it’s substituted Helvetica. Have you tried substituting a Roman font for Osaka and seeing whether the problem still occurs? Or try another Japanese font that does have a Roman alphabet; I know several of them do, like the Hiragino Kaku Gothic family. —Jens
