No. Osaka contains Japanese, Roman, Cyrillic and a lot other glyphs. It turned out to be embarrasingly simple: There is (in Xcode 4.0.2) a Check Box for TextFieldCells: "Allows Rich Text", which I had forgotten to set. Sorry for the noise.
